Sick Day

I'm sick and took a day off work today. If it had been any other time, I would have gone anyways. Since the Swine Flu is everywhere in the news and everyone is freaking out, I figured I would stay home for my co-workers and customers' sake. What a great time to get sick...right when the swine flu reaches a level five pandemic category. Now everyone at work probably thinks I have the Swine flu and won't want to touch me with a ten foot pole. Yesterday when I was at work I sneezed in front of a customer and he started making pig noises. It was actually pretty funny.

It was nice to relax and be home for a day. My day consisted of reading "The Host" by Stephanie Meyer. I am really enjoying it thus far and highly recommend it. When I went to watch "High School Musical 3" (don't make fun of me) our DVD player wouldn't work! What a bummer. A sick day requires a good movie.

Anyways, I am trying to decide if I am going to go to work tomorrow. I don't have anymore paid time off, I feel good enough to go, but no-one will want snotty nose around. We will see... I don't want any trouble from my co-workers.

Kinda like Motel 6...

Niel is in LA for the next four weeks for a pediatrics rotation. He has to stay in dorms with a roommate. Luckily, he does get to come home on the weekends. Yesterday was his first day and he sent me some pictures from his Iphone of his dorm with the following comments: "No TV?!? What is this crap?"

"This is not cool. I heard this place was seedy, but I didn't think it would be a haunted apartment from the twilight zone."
What a character, I will miss him! Last night he told me that he might be able to come home during the week. We will see how the next four weeks go.

Zefron

I convinced Niel to take me to "17 Again" with Zac Efron on Friday night. Poor guy. But don't feel that bad for him. I go with him to see all of the guy movies he wants to see and unfortunately there are a bunch of those coming out this summer. He has been talking about Origin of Wolverine, Transformers, and some others. I don't make him watch chick movies that often so I figured I had some leverage in this decision. Here is the funny part...as we were walking into the movie theatre we saw some friends who we go to church with. We talked to them briefly and then they asked which movie we were seeing. We replied sheepishly, "ummm 17 again." They thought it was SO funny that Niel had agreed to go with me. Of course they had fun giving Niel a hard time.

Anyways, I really liked the movie. It's surprisingly funny AND Zac Efron did a good job:) Ahem. Niel decided it's funny to call him "Zefron". He said to me after the movie, "You are totally crushing on Zefron!"

We topped off the night with some In-N-Out for dinner. I haven't ever mentioned how much I like In-N-Out and I think it needs to be addressed. It is right up there with Costa Vida. I told Niel the other night that we need to live where there is an In-N-Out. The funny thing is that the first burger or two I tried I thought to myself, "What is the big deal? This doesn't taste much different than other burgers." Well, I was wrong...now I am hooked.

A home on the range?

Monday we received an exciting call from a recruiter telling Niel that Doctor Adams (the doctor Niel had a phone interview with last week) wanted to fly both Niel and I to Pendleton, Oregon for an interview. Dr. Adams owns a private practice and is looking for a PA who would buy into the practice and become his partner. We were both very excited! Pendleton is only an hour from where my sister lives, and about 2 1/2 from where my parents and brother live. A job close to my family AND an opportunity to be Dr. Adam's partner of the practice! The thought of getting a free flight and weekend getaway sounded great, especially since we would probably get to see our family.

Even though it was VERY exciting and flattering to be offered a first interview we decided to turn the opportunity down. Pendleton, Oregon is a small town (12, 000 people) known for its famous rodeo. The closest mall is an hour away and I am pretty sure there isn't even a Target there. Don't get me wrong, I grew up in a town smaller than Pendleton. Quincy's population was 5,000, had two stoplights, and didn't get a McDonald's until I was in Jr. High School. I have grown up in a small and I know what it is like. I loved growing up in Quincy but would not choose to go back and settle there. Niel and I both agree that we would like to live in a bigger city or a suburb of a big city. It is so nice to be able to drive 5-10 minutes to get to Costco, Target, the mall, the movie theatre, major restaurant chains, etc. I love having everything so close and accessible. We decided that Pendelton, OR wasn't the life style suited for us and told the recruiter we wouldn't be coming.

Maybe we should have taken the interview, maybe we might regret it. Hopefully we won't regret it though, hopefully there is something bigger and better out there for the Schurigs:)

There's a new sheriff in town...

Today I caught two guys stealing fuel at our company's CFN station. They had stolen their boss's CFN card (a credit card for fuel) and were filling up multiple gas jugs. I pulled up, noticed the suspicious activity, and jotted down their license plate number. Then I got out of the car and acted casual. After filling up my sweet ride, I went back into the office to report the incident and it happened to be one of our customers. We cancelled their CFN card, got video footage, and reported their license plate numbers...busted suckers!

Those bad boys are going down and they don't even know it. They thought the little brunette girl didn't have a clue. Wrong...don't underestimate my capabilities.

Some good stuff

Besides Niel hurting his back while working out and a few other setbacks (ahem), we had a pretty good week. Here are a few of last week's highlights.

1. We went to our favorite self-serve frozen yogurt place Ohana's. I think we are addicted.

2. Watched Bedtime Stories with Adam Sandler. We both really liked it and would highly recommend seeing it. We might even consider buying it, and we hardly ever buy movies. 3. I went to the gym three times and it felt great! I'm not necessarily hoping to lose weight, but I would really like to get into good shape, ya know look hot:)

4. Niel got a phone call interview with a Doctor in Pendleton, Oregon! This was such exciting news, mostly because it made things seem real...that he could actually get a job and start working as a PA at the end of the year. Before then, it didn't seem real for some reason. It seemed like a distant dream. Even though nothing may come of it, it was still exciting for us!

Schurig Pest Control

I woke up at 6:30 a.m. on my Saturday morning to be at a "mandatory" company training from 8-10:30 a.m. that actually went until 11:30 a.m. At the meeting my suspicions were confirmed that the company laptop I bring home every several weeks when I am on call is infested with cockroaches. Yeah-I didn't even know that was possible. I won't discuss the details of the story because honestly, I don't even want to remember the details. I am SO disgusted and disturbed by the whole ordeal. To my knowledge roaches don't exist in Washington or Utah, or at least I never saw any. Unfortunately, roaches like warmer climates and DO exist in California. SO...since this roach infested laptop has been at MY house this past week, there is a good chance that we have some cockroaches in our apartment that ventured out from the laptop.

When I got home from the training I spent the whole afternoon doing a deep clean which included pulling out the stove and fridge, sweeping, and scrubbing till not even a single crumb could be found for a freakin' roach. I decided to be extra safe by purchasing two methods of roach killers: the roach traps AND the roach bug spray. I sprayed EVERYWHERE until I was lightheaded, dizzy, and ready to pass out from the fumes. I was extra careful to set out 12 traps between our little kitchen and bathroom. If there are any more roaches those suckers have no chance for survival. Once I fumigated the house and found myself very dizzy, we left the apartment with no plan except one thing was clear: we were leaving our fumigated living space and going somewhere, anywhere, anyplace but the stinky apartment. FYI: If roach spray claims to be "citrus scent", that is a straight-up lie.

Ya want to know what made today worse? It was beautiful, sunny, and 85 degrees today and I wanted to be at the beach SO bad. I had been thinking about it all week but I couldn't find anyone who could go with me.

Ok, moving on. This is the point when my day turns around a bit. We got out of the house, drove to Rancho Cucamonga and had dinner at Red Robin. Understandably, I didn't have much of an appetite so I just ordered a smoothy and snacked on Niel's food. It was the most delicious smoothy I have ever tasted but I can't remember what it was called. Something to do with Hawaii. Then we walked around the Victoria Gardens mall, which is a beautiful outdoor mall. We stopped at Borders books and read while a gentlemen serenaded us with love songs while playing the piano.

Our evening got my mind off the nasty critters except for the fact that I kept feeling like critters were crawling on me (don't worry, there weren't any actually on me). I know that there are worse things in life than cockroaches, but I am seriously traumatized by the whole ordeal and hope to never see a roach in my life again!

Little Miss Piggy

Almost every day I bring a sack lunch to work. My fellow co-workers hardly ever bring lunch so it makes it easy for me to know which lunch is mine...the only brown paper bag in the fridge. Today on my lunch break I went to the fridge not noticing that there were two other brown paper bags in the fridge and grabbed the first one. I went to the back computer by my boss' desk to surf the web while I ate my lunch. Niel, being the wonderful husband that he is made my lunch this morning. As I was leaving he said, "don't forget your lunch, I spiced it up today." His words replayed in my head as I pulled out the sandwich and noticed the abundance of fresh deli-cut meat. I thought to myself, "Where and when did he get this lunch meat?" and then I proceeded to eat the sandwich. It was very delicious and I decided to text Niel after I finished eating to tell him how amazing the sandwich was he made me. I noticed a huge orange in the bag and thought to myself, "That is a huge orange...probably the biggest one of the batch we bought."
Once I finished the banana I tuned into some commotion that had been going on behind me. I looked behind me to see a brown paper bag sitting on my boss' desk while her son exclaimed, "It isn't there, there is only one lunch in the fridge, I checked twice. I don't know where the other one is." At that point I realized what was going on as these things ran through my mind 1) weird sandwich 2) extra large orange 3) three people brought brown bag lunches 4) one is missing. Realizing what I had done I turned bright red and belted out, "I think I ate your lunch!" My boss' face was a look of unbelief and disgust. I mean, how could anyone eat a stranger's lunch and not realize it?! I was SO embarrassed! Of ALL people why did I have to eat the lunch that belonged to my boss' son?! I told him he could have my lunch even though I doubted he wanted peanut butter and jelly. He said I ended up doing him a favor since he wanted to eat out anyway. I tried to explain how it was an honest mistake-Niel made my lunch, and we had everything at home that was in the lunch (except for the lunch meat).

Anyways, everyone had a good laugh at my expense. Cindy said, "Don't put your lunch in the fridge because Darci will eat it!" I am pretty sure I won't live this one down for a while. Hopefully my boss doesn't think I am a complete idiot. Remember, it is better to learn from others' mistakes than to learn from making mistakes of your own. Moral of the story: Make sure it is your lunch before eating it.

She's back...

The one...the only...Natalie Hintz is BACK!!! She just returned from serving a mission in Chile for a year and a half. On Sunday night my cell phone rang and it was Natalie!!! It was so great to hear her voice and catch up. I missed this girl while she was gone! I met Natalie my sophomore year of college. We roomed together at Liberty Square and then at Chandell condos before I got married.

I will say one thing... just about every guy at BYU is definitely counting the days until she makes her appearance on campus:)

Photobucket

She is only about a 4 hour road-trip away in Phoenix. It is tempting to do a road trip to Phoenix to see her. Anyone heading to or want to go to AZ? If a road trip doesn't work out, I am hoping to see her when I go to Utah in May. When I see her, we will definitely go for a cruise with the top down, blast "Dance with Somebody" by Whitney Houston, and sing at the top our lungs just like old times. I can't wait to see her!

Can you pull me into town?

Darci and I like to go on bike rides together. The problem is we only have one bike (you'll have to ask Darci what happened to our other bike). I used to jog along side Darci, but now I rollerblade. I don't care what anyone says, rollerblading is still cool

Happy Easter

We had a very nice and relaxing Easter. We went to church, ate a delicious Easter dinner, took a two hour nap, went for a bike ride, and enjoyed the sunny and warm weather. For our Easter dinner we had ham, green bean casserole, broccoli salad, rolls, and red beets. You probably don't care what we ate but this is especially note-worthy since I don't like cooking.

This past week I have been somewhat homesick. I am tired of being so far away from family and missing out on baby blessings, babtisms, etc. Most of our immediate family is in Washington and Utah...not exactly a weekend trip away. I think my homesickness gets worse around the holidays.

Every Easter my mom would take me shopping for an Easter dress to wear to church. I remember when I was really little I would get the dresses with the matching hats. Sometimes I even got the white gloves and the bobby socks with lace on them. Yeah, you know the ones I am talking about. For some reason I got to thinking about that tradition this year and I decided I needed an Easter dress:)

I really wanted a picture of us together on Easter. Unfortunately, we looked like gomers in all of the pictures. Believe it or not this is the best picture. I am laughing, hold my dress down from the wind, and Niel is holding a cheesy smile. Please enjoy.

Easter Festivities

When I was growing up, every Easter I would color easter eggs with my mom and sister. I miss this fun tradition so this year I decided we would dye easter eggs. Turns out that Niel wasn't too jazzed about the idea. That didn't stop me though.

Youth Conference '09

Niel and I helped at this year's youth conference "I Believe." About 130 youth between the ages of 14-18 attended. It was held at Big Bear's Camp Hinckley last Friday and Saturday.

I got off work early on Friday so that we could drive kids up the mountain. All the kids stayed in cabins with bunk beds. Niel and I had our own little room with two twin beds (see the picture above). We had great meals all weekend long. Friday night the kids were divided into groups and performed skits. Saturday there were workshop rotations which included different speakers and an outdoor activity.

I helped with the outdoor "Catch the Spirit" workshop. This workshop consisted of various relays including passing the lifesaver with a toothpick, passing an orange, group run, donut eating, and several others. It was so funny to watch them pass the toothpick and the orange. I was out in the sun all day and got a pretty nice sunburn/tan.

This is Patty, Taylor, and Alex on the car ride up. Poor Niel was stuck with us girls as we blasted music and sang along.
Taylor, Alex and I decided to bring the lawn chairs to the edge of the mountain to catch some rays after lunch. Very relaxing.

Skits
Joanna, Scott, and Brittany

After the workshops on Saturday we went back down the mountain to the church to have a very nice dinner, slide show, and dance.

A few things

1. We paid off our Lexus. WA-HOO!! Now both of our cars are paid off!

2. I won the Thank you card drawing at work again! I got a $25 gift card to Target and I already put it to good use by buying Twilight. We also bought Niel a scale because he wants to get in shape:)

3. My sister Jennifer had her baby last night! I am so excited for her but wish I could be there SO bad.

4. I've been working some overtime lately, got paid yesterday and liked the look of the check. I decided Niel and I deserved a nice dinner out. We went to eat at Cheesecake Factory and I tried their new caramel chicken. Then we went shopping at the Galleria mall.

5. Niel started his Pediatrics rotation, which has been a challenge. He is annoyed by how many parents bring their kids in for colds and other unnecessary visits. This is especially annoying since most patients are on medical and have no co-payment so they don't mind wasting the clinics time with frivolous office visits. Another reason why California is on the verge of bankruptcy.

Chloe

On February 22nd, Niel's sister Devra, who lives in Alaska had a baby girl and they named her Chloe. She was born 5 weeks early and only weighed 5 lbs. 14 oz. They finally got to bring her home from the hospital this last week. Here is a more recent picture of her.
I still haven't visited Alaska to see where Niel grew up. We are hoping to visit one of these days when Niel is done with school. Now we have a great excuse to go...to meet Chloe!
